Hummingbirds are one of the wonderful and exotic things about Massachusetts for this Dane. Annina made a garden for us of potted plants on the small patio outside my office, where the flowers and a hummingbird feeder have been much frequented. What a joy it has been to watch them come and go, though these days I look at them a bit wistfully wondering how long it will be before they will migrate south.
It seems that I sometimes more easily slip into mourning the eventual passing of the current joy of what I have, than anticipating the joys that are still to come. Maybe it is that we know so well the joy of summers passed, but we feel uncertain of the joys yet to come.
The Lord promises us renewal in regeneration if we follow Him. He will make all things new. So, it seems that in the Lord we have an antidote to our mourning of things past and our worry for the future. There is still a beautiful Autumn to come, and a wonderful Winter too. Then there is Church on Sunday and even a heaven, for those who wait patiently for the Lord.
